PTO Openings for the 2019-2020 School Year
PTO has a variety of opportunities for you to get involved in school activities. No matter what event catches your eye, you will not be left to figure it out on your own! We have fantastic directions of what needs to be done when and at least one person to help get you up and running. Want to get involved but not sure what would be a good fit for you? Just ask! We have opportunities to meet any time commitment.
Book Fair Coordinators: Book Fair is scheduled during parent teacher conferences in the fall and spring. Co-chairs coordinate with Scholastic to plan, decorate, and run the fair. At least one of the chairs needs to be available during the day.
Yearbook: This committee creates the Horizon Yearbook. Most of the work is completed online, so computer experience is helpful. Some photography is required, depending on the number of photo donations received. This committee is active occasionally throughout the year. At least one member needs to be available during the school day. The committee is primarily busy during March.
Sock Hop Coordinator: This person coordinates the annual Sock Hop. This is usually held around Halloween and is a free event for Horizon kids.
Ice Cream Social Coordinator: This person coordinates the ice cream social that takes place during meet the teacher a couple of days before the school year starts.
Summer Reading Splash Coordinator: Responsibilities include distribution and collection of reading logs, tallying of results, awarding of prizes, and coordinating the staff dunk tank for top readers. This committee also visits the Scholastic Warehouse Sale to purchase books used as rewards. This committee is primarily active in the fall right after school starts.
Walkathon Committee: This committee is active in the late summer/ fall coordinating Horizon’s only direct-donation fundraiser. This committee needs a chairperson or co-chairs who can plan the event. Many people are available to assist with tasks!!
Bingo Coordinator: This person coordinates the annual Bingo family night. This is generally held the first Friday of March. Kohls volunteers and Silver Cord students provide much of the volunteer help that evening. This is a favorite event for many of our Horizon families!
Fine Arts Night Coordinator: This person works with Horizon’s art teachers to provide volunteers for a craft project (if any) and a snack. This event happens in May.
5th Grade Celebration Coordinator: This person works with the 5th grade teachers to plan a great celebration for the 5th graders. In May 2019, students went to Jester Park and had Kona Ice when they returned to school!
School Supply Kits Coordinator: This person works with our supply kit company to determine kit pricing, advertises the kits, places the kit orders (more and more are ordered by parents online), and ensures the kits get distributed before Meet the Teacher in August.
Garden Committee: This committee will be responsible for maintaining the Learning Garden (East side of the building facing the playground) and the Butterfly Garden (middle of school near the cafeteria). In the past, these gardens were maintained by two parents. The goal would be to have a larger committee to make it a lighter workload for all. We are also seeing input from other sources (Master Gardeners, etc.)
